The Lagos State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding a viral video circulating online which alleged that operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce were driving against traffic in the Ikorodu axis of the state.
Addressing journalists on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, said the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026, during a routine traffic enforcement patrol.
According to him, officers were on patrol inbound Mile 12 when a vehicle was intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol and Protection unit after the driver allegedly made a wrongful turn in violation of traffic regulations.
Police said the driver attempted to evade arrest by reversing his vehicle and ramming into an oncoming commercial mini-bus, damaging the vehicle and endangering other road users.
The Safer Highway Patrol team subsequently handed over the driver and the vehicle to Taskforce officers for further action.
During the enforcement operation, the suspect allegedly resisted arrest and obstructed traffic, resulting in a temporary gridlock along the corridor.

Police said additional Taskforce personnel used minimal force to remove the suspect from the roadway and restore normal traffic flow.
The damaged mini-bus was later towed to the Taskforce office in Oshodi, while the suspect’s vehicle was taken to Alausa for further investigation.
Preliminary investigation, according to the police, also revealed that the suspect allegedly instigated bystanders, leading to a brief mob action against Taskforce officers during which stones were thrown at them.
The police further stated that the viral video circulating online was recorded by the suspect while his vehicle was being transported to Alausa and did not capture the full context of the incident.
The suspect, identified as Lateef Adeyemo, was later arraigned before a mobile court in Oshodi on four counts, including conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, driving against traffic, obstruction of public officers in the discharge of their duties and malicious damage.
He was remanded in prison custody after failing to meet the bail conditions.
The police also cited Part III, Schedule 1, Item 27 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law and Regulations 2018, which prohibits driving in a prohibited direction or neglecting lawful traffic directions, noting that the offence is punishable upon conviction with one year imprisonment and forfeiture of the vehicle to the state government.
The command urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with law enforcement officers while advising the public to avoid spreading misleading narratives capable of causing public misunderstanding.
The police reiterated that no one is above the law and warned that anyone who violates the law or challenges lawful authority would face the full consequences.
