Ademola Lookman is set to play a central role in a crucial two-week period for Atlético Madrid as they prepare for an unusual run of three high-profile clashes against Barcelona across La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, the media reports.

The Spanish giants face off in the league first at the Metropolitano before meeting again four days later at Camp Nou for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The return leg will then take place in Madrid on April 14, completing a rare trilogy of fixtures within a short span.

This sequence comes shortly after both sides met in a thrilling Copa del Rey semi-final, which Atlético won 4-3 on aggregate, giving each team valuable insight into the other’s tactics ahead of these decisive encounters.

Lookman, who joined Atlético during the winter transfer window, has quickly become a key figure in Diego Simeone’s attack. Speaking ahead of the opening match, the Nigerian forward remained focused and measured in his approach.

“It’s a special game against a tough opponent. We just have to prepare properly and take it one match at a time,” he said.

Since arriving, the 28-year-old has made an immediate impact, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first six games, and contributing eight goal involvements in 14 appearances overall. He also became the first Atlético player to score in La Liga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey within his opening spell at the club.

One of his standout performances came in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona, where he scored and assisted in a dominant first-half display that helped Atlético race into a commanding lead. His pace and movement exposed Barcelona’s defence, offering a potential blueprint for the upcoming matches.

Under Simeone, Lookman has also improved defensively, adapting to the team’s disciplined system. He acknowledged that developing this aspect of his game has made him a more complete player.

Beyond his attacking contributions, his work rate and tactical awareness have stood out in recent performances, reflecting his growth and experience.

With Atlético’s La Liga title hopes fading, the club is expected to prioritise European and cup competitions, especially with a Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad also on the horizon.

Despite some injury concerns within the squad, Atlético are unlikely to ease off, given Simeone’s typically intense approach in big games.

For Lookman, maintaining peak performance across the demanding schedule will depend on discipline off the pitch as well, including proper recovery and preparation.

Having already delivered in major matches this season, including against top opponents, Lookman heads into this defining stretch as a key attacking threat for Atlético. The upcoming clashes with Barcelona could ultimately shape the outcome of their campaign.
