The crisis in Ogbomosoland escalated as former lawmaker Senator Hamzat Adeseun resigned from his position as Mayegun of Ogbomosoland, citing concerns over the monarch’s leadership style, rising tensions, and alleged divisive actions in the town.

Adeseun’s resignation follows the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, suspending him indefinitely from the chieftaincy title in a letter dated March 23, 2026, over alleged insubordination and disrespect to the palace.

In a separate letter to the monarch, Adeseun stated that his resignation is effective immediately, noting that he had been considering stepping down since the early months of Oba Olaoye’s reign.

He explained that he initially delayed leaving out of respect for the Sounship institution and in honor of the late Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, who conferred the title on him five years ago in recognition of his contributions to Ogbomosoland’s development.

At a press briefing, Adeseun warned of a growing leadership crisis in Ogbomoso, accusing the monarch of undermining the town’s long-standing peace and unity. He described Ogbomoso as historically tolerant and accommodating, emphasizing that its legacy of harmony among religious and cultural groups is now at risk.

Adeseun alleged that the monarch engaged in supremacy disputes with other traditional rulers, including the Olugbon of Orile Igbon and the Onpetu of Ijeru, despite their autonomous positions. He also accused the monarch of interfering in religious matters, particularly a leadership conflict involving the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, which has heightened tensions within the Muslim community. Attempts to remove the Chief Imam drew interventions from both the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Christian Association of Nigeria, but the disputes remain unresolved.

He further claimed that the monarch targeted community organizations and respected individuals, including socio-cultural groups like Ogbomoso Parapo Worldwide, whose leadership he allegedly sought to dissolve before the courts intervened. Adeseun also highlighted incidents of harassment and intimidation against prominent figures, market leaders, and grassroots associations, which he said disrupted the town’s longstanding harmony.

“In these circumstances, I cannot in good conscience continue to operate as a Chief under your leadership,” Adeseun stated.

He highlighted his contributions to Ogbomosoland’s development, citing projects such as the establishment of the National Biotechnology Development Agency center in Onipanu and the Federal Polytechnic Ayede.

Adeseun called on the Oyo State Government and other relevant authorities to intervene urgently to restore peace, warning that continued unrest could have wider security implications.

Despite resigning, he reaffirmed his commitment to the town’s peace, unity, and development, urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and ensure harmony prevails.
