INSECURITY: OBI REACTS TO ABDUCTION OF UTME CANDIDATES IN BENUE

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned the abduction of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates in Benue State, describing it as further evidence of worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
In a post on his verified X account on Friday, Obi said the incident was both distressing and a serious reflection of leadership failure in addressing security challenges.
He stated that the kidnapping of innocent students was unacceptable and highlighted what he described as the collapse of security across the country.
“The news of the abduction of innocent UTME candidates in Benue State is not just heartbreaking but a damning indictment of the failure of leadership and the collapse of security in our nation,” he wrote.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, warned that young Nigerians pursuing education are increasingly vulnerable to violent attacks, saying this poses a significant threat to the country’s future.
He stressed that no student should be lost to violence, adding that a nation that fails to protect its youth risks endangering its own survival.

He also noted that Nigeria’s rate of tertiary education attainment remains low compared to countries such as Indonesia and South Africa, calling the situation alarming.
Obi further criticised those in authority, accusing them of focusing more on political ambitions than on securing citizens.
He argued that resources and energy often directed toward elections and political advantage should instead be used to improve security and rescue abducted victims.
Describing the situation as part of a broader and disturbing trend, Obi called for urgent and decisive measures to tackle insecurity across the country.
He said the incident was not isolated but part of a growing national crisis that requires immediate and responsible leadership action rather than excuses or silence.
