NRS DEBUNKS CLAIM OF NEW VEHICLE TAX IN NIGERIA

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has clarified that the federal government has not introduced any new tax on vehicles.
The agency was responding to a viral infographic circulating online, which falsely claimed that a new vehicle tax would take effect from July 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman on Media and Publicity, Dare Adekanmbi, said the message did not originate from the agency or any government body.

He explained that the misleading post instructs owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified levy online or through designated banks, while also linking to an unverified government website.
Adekanmbi noted that the fake message was designed to look authentic by using official government symbols and insignia to deceive the public.
The NRS firmly dismissed the claim, stressing that no such policy or directive has been issued by the federal government or any of its agencies.
He urged Nigerians to ignore the information and rely only on verified official channels for updates on tax policies and payment obligations.
The agency also encouraged the public to follow its official communication platforms for accurate and reliable information regarding tax administration and government directives.
