The Abia State Police Command has launched a Violent Crime Response Unit, supported by an independent civilian oversight board, as part of ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism, accountability, and operational efficiency within the force.
The inauguration ceremony, which was held on Tuesday, was presided over by the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, alongside members of the command’s management team.
According to the command, the initiative aligns with the vision and directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to develop a force that is professional, humane, accountable, and effective.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, explained that the unit was created after a thorough process involving screening, selection, and specialised training.
She added that the orientation programme was designed to instil discipline, enhance operational efficiency, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism among personnel.
The Violent Crime Response Unit is tasked with promptly responding to and investigating all forms of violent crime across Abia State with speed, accuracy, and professionalism.
To promote transparency and public confidence, the unit will operate under the supervision of a Civilian Oversight Board made up of representatives from the Abia State Traditional Rulers Council, human rights organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, and Amnesty International, among others.
The board is expected to provide independent monitoring and ensure strict compliance with human rights and professional conduct standards.
The command has also set up a fully equipped operational base for the unit at the Orji Uzor Kalu Bridge in Aba, with additional sub-units established across the state.
According to the statement, the facilities meet required operational and detention standards to ensure the protection of suspects’ rights and dignity.
Speaking at the event, CP Isa reaffirmed the command’s commitment to discipline, professionalism, and coordinated crime control, warning that misconduct, abuse of power, or impunity would not be tolerated.
He also urged residents to support the police by providing timely and credible information, noting that the command remains committed to intelligence-led policing, stronger community relations, and the protection of lives and property.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Civilian Oversight Board, HRH Eze Linus Mba, commended the initiative and pledged the board’s support through oversight and intelligence collaboration, adding that it would serve as a bridge between the police and the public while promoting transparency and accountability.
