PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI DECLARES FLOOD INCIDENTS “NATIONAL DISASTER”

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has directed the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to declare the current incidents of flooding in the country a “national disaster”.
 
According to BBC reports, the President gave the command  following the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s alert of flooding in some states like,Rivers Benue and Niger where the flood had almost reached levels that resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property in 2012.
 
BBC also reported, at least 100 people have lost their lives, following incidents of flooding across the country.
 
The Hydrological Services Agency however, identified lack of proper town planning, blocked waterways and poor drainage systems as factors responsible for recurring floods in the country.
