Live updates: Polls open in US presidential election in a century
Polling stations have opened across most of the east coast of the US as the first ballots are cast in the long-awaited election pitting Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump.
By the end of the day, the nastiest presidential campaign in more than a century will be over and we will know who will be heading to the White House.
And if it’s a blowout, we may know a lot sooner.
Voters are choosing between Democrat Mrs Clinton, the favourite going into election day, or Republican Mr Trump, who have faced off in a campaign marked by ugly rhetoric and personal attacks, all of which helped expose a deep and bitter divide in the electorate.
Voters are also electing members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the US Senate.
Polling locations will continue to open across the US all the way to Hawaii, the state farthest to the west. Millions of voters already have cast their ballots in early voting, which is offered in 34 states and in Washington.
