UPDATE: NEWLY REGISTERED ACADEMIC ASSOCIATIONS WILL POSE GREATER THREATS TO UNIVERSITIES PROGRESS – STUDENT GROUP
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The recently registered academic associations, Congress of Nigeria University Academics and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics, according to the National Association of University Students, South-West Zone, will pose increased challenges to universities’ development.
A statement signed by the South-West NAUS Vice-President, Adesoji Oladimeji, said, āThe attempt of the Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to defy the Academic Staff Union of Universities by presenting a certificate of registration to other rival academic unions is a mere distraction and the divide and conquer method will pose a great threat to the university community.ā
It also said, āThe legal process embarked upon by the FG is seen as an arrant joke, abuse of office and an action to jeopardise negotiations with ASUU and not with the interest of studentās heart.ā
In the statement, Olamideji referred to the Minister of Labour and Employment’s attitude and behavior as impolite and unprofessional, warning that it would jeopardize the ongoing negotiations with ASUU.
In order to terminate the industrial strike and allow students to return to class, NAUS urged other unions to stand together.
