The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has criticised the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over its opposition to the N70,000 monthly transport allowance recently approved for public workers by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during an interview with The Media on Wednesday, Ajaero said the TUC had never negotiated with the government for relief measures to cushion the effects of the rising cost of living.

He explained that while the NLC was pushing for government intervention to ease the economic hardship faced by workers, the TUC failed to join the effort.

Ajaero argued that the TUC had no grounds to oppose the relief package secured by the NLC, insisting that his union had pursued the intervention independently.

“You don’t kick against something you did not ask for or negotiate for. You have not asked for anything all these years, and suddenly something was given to the NLC, and you now say you are kicking against it. The TUC never asked for intervention as a result of the rising cost of living,” he said.

He added, “Why is the TUC challenging what was secured for the workers when we stated clearly that the NLC was acting alone?”

The disagreement follows the TUC’s rejection of the N70,000 monthly transport allowance, with the union demanding N300,000 instead.

The Tinubu administration approved the allowance amid rising fuel prices and growing calls for a review of the minimum wage to address the increasing cost of living.
