Academic activities are expected to resume immediately at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) following the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by lecturers.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced the decision on Friday after negotiations with the Lagos State Government over staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements.
The development is expected to bring relief to students and parents affected by the disruption of academic activities across the three state-owned institutions.
In a joint statement, the union leaders described the suspension of the strike as a significant milestone in their efforts to secure improved welfare for lecturers and ensure the implementation of previously reached agreements.
The statement was signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUTECH.
The union expressed appreciation to media organisations, civil society groups, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders who supported its members throughout the negotiations.
It particularly acknowledged the contributions of pro-worker organisations, including the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC) and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR), for their advocacy in support of quality public tertiary education.
The ASUU leaders also commended traditional rulers for their interventions and thanked students and parents for their patience and understanding during the industrial action.
“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations,” the statement read.
Confirming the immediate resumption of academic activities, the union said its members would return to their classrooms while maintaining their commitment to academic excellence and quality university education.
However, ASUU noted that discussions with the Lagos State Government would continue to ensure a comprehensive resolution of outstanding issues relating to its members’ welfare package.
“As our members return to the classrooms with immediate effect, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education,” the statement added.
