BALLON D’OR 2026: KANE, YAMAL, MESSI LEAD RACE FOR FOOTBALL’S TOP PRIZE

With the 2025/26 football season officially concluded following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention has shifted to the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, one of football’s most coveted individual honours.
The contest is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Rodri, and reigning holder Ousmane Dembélé emerging as the leading contenders, according to rankings and assessments by major sports outlets, including Sports Illustrated.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26, 2026, in London, where the winner will succeed Dembélé, who claimed the award in 2025.

According to UEFA, Messi remains the most decorated Ballon d’Or winner with eight titles, while Cristiano Ronaldo follows with five.
Leading Contenders
Each of the frontrunners has built a compelling case.
Harry Kane has earned widespread praise for his outstanding goalscoring record and club performances, while Lamine Yamal’s chances have been boosted by Spain’s triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Messi and Mbappé also strengthened their credentials with impressive performances during the tournament, while Rodri and Dembélé continue to feature prominently in discussions surrounding the award.
Football Figures Back Their Favourites
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Kane deserves to win based on his performances over the past year.
“Based on the past 12 months, Kane should win the Ballon d’Or,” Carragher said, while acknowledging that success in a World Cup year could influence voting in favour of players from the winning nation.
Former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has repeatedly tipped his Spain teammate Lamine Yamal to eventually claim the prize, praising the teenager’s exceptional talent even before Spain lifted the World Cup.
Former France defender William Gallas also believes Yamal now has a stronger case than Kane, arguing that his role in Spain’s World Cup victory outweighs Kane’s impressive individual statistics.
Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna highlighted Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise as a potential Ballon d’Or contender, saying the Frenchman could have challenged seriously for the award had Bayern won the UEFA Champions League.
Media Divided Between Kane and Yamal
Major sports publications have largely narrowed the race to Kane and Yamal.
Reports by Sporting News and TalkSPORT place the pair among the leading favourites, although their credentials differ.
Kane’s case rests on his prolific scoring record and consistency at club level, while Yamal combines domestic success with the biggest prize in international football after helping Spain win the World Cup.
Mbappé and Messi Remain Strong Candidates
French newspaper L’Équipe reported that readers overwhelmingly backed Kylian Mbappé in a poll involving more than 35,000 participants, with the Real Madrid forward receiving nearly 32 per cent of the votes.
His candidacy has been strengthened by a remarkable season, including 10 goals at the World Cup, making him the tournament’s top scorer.
Lionel Messi has also re-entered the Ballon d’Or conversation after inspiring Argentina to another World Cup final, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.
Both L’Équipe and CBS Sports have identified the Argentine captain as a genuine contender for a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or.
Defending Champion Still in the Mix
Reigning winner Ousmane Dembélé remains among the favourites after another strong campaign.
Before the World Cup, he was widely viewed as a leading candidate to retain the award, with analysts continuing to rank him alongside Mbappé, Kane, Yamal, Erling Haaland, Raphinha and Rodri.
As voting approaches, the debate continues over what should carry greater weight—individual brilliance, club success or World Cup glory—making the 2026 Ballon d’Or race one of the most closely contested in years.
