COURT GIVES NNAMDI KANU WEDNESDAY DEADLINE TO OPEN DEFENCE IN TERRORISM TRIAL
The Federal High Court in Abuja has given Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), until Wednesday to open his defence in his ongoing terrorism trial.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case, issued the directive after the prosecution closed its case, having presented witnesses and evidence against the separatist leader.
The judge warned that failure by the defendant to open his defence within the stipulated time could lead the court to close his case and proceed to judgment based on the prosecution’s evidence.

Kanu is standing trial on multiple charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement, filed by the Federal Government. He has consistently maintained his innocence and challenged the competence of the charges.
The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021. His trial has drawn both national and international attention, with supporters demanding his release and the government insisting on due legal process.
The matter has been adjourned until Wednesday for Kanu to open his defence.
