The National Association of Nigerian Students has asked President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency because of the insecurity in the country.
In a statement released on Friday by its Senate President, Usman Nagwaza, NANS also urged Tinubu to fully support the Ministry of Defence by giving more power to the armed forces so they can fight harder against criminals who are causing fear and harm to people in Nigeria.
“We are not standing for violence or crime.
Our main worry is Nigeria, especially students, who are being impacted the most by the insecurity.
“We also ask the President to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and give more support to the armed forces so they can carry out more operations against criminals throughout the country.”
“NANS appealed to Nigerians to rally behind the Ministry of Defence and reject what it termed the politics of character assassination, stressing that such actions undermine national efforts to restore peace and stability,” the statement read.
Speaking on allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to banditry, NANS described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
The student body averred that Matawalle was being unfairly targeted at a time when the country needed unity to tackle worsening insecurity.
Recently, Tinubu named General Christopher Musa as the new Defense Minister, giving him the responsibility of leading a more coordinated national security approach.
The government also mentioned that it has fixed more than 100 armored fighting vehicles and intends to get more advanced equipment, like drones and vehicles that protect against mines and ambushes, to improve the military‘s ability to carry out operations.
