Nigeria’s power production dropped from about 3,840 megawatts to 476.70MW on Monday afternoon, causing electricity cuts in several areas of the country.

According to data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s website, niggrid.org, the total electricity being generated on the grid was around 3,840MW at 7 am, but it fell quickly to 476.70MW by 1 pm.

The power generation stayed fairly steady during the morning, but then dropped suddenly around 12:40 pm.
This led most power plants across the country to report no output.

Only a few power stations, such as Odukpani NIPP, Omotosho, and Sapele, were producing a small amount of electricity by 1 pm.

Major power plants, including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji, alongside several gas-fired facilities, recorded zero generation on the grid.

The big drop happened at the same time as news about power cuts, as people using electricity posted on social media about the problems between around 12:45 pm and 1:20 pm.

By 1:23 pm, the NISO dashboard showed that electricity was being made at about 480MW, and only five power companies were producing electricity.

The figures indicated a drop of more than 3,300MW from the level recorded at 7am, raising concerns about the stability of the national electricity system.

A senior NISO official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the reported outages could have resulted from local issues.

“There is no disturbance at the moment. Probably if something is happening, maybe it is a local issue, but there is nothing on the grid,” the official said.

The official explained that temporary outages or minor tripping in certain areas did not necessarily amount to a national grid collapse.

A source however spoke with HOTJIST saying electricity supply has been restored.
