Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has said social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has emerged as an alternative to the judiciary for Nigerians seeking justice.

Farotimi made the remarks in a YouTube video released on Saturday while addressing the controversy surrounding VeryDarkMan’s invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.

According to Farotimi, VeryDarkMan’s growing influence reflects the inability of Nigeria’s judicial system to adequately deliver justice to ordinary citizens.

He argued that in a society with an effective police and judicial system, individuals such as VeryDarkMan would not have gained prominence as alternative avenues for seeking justice.

Farotimi described the activist as a reflection of the shortcomings of Nigeria’s justice system, arguing that efforts to discredit or attack him would not address the underlying institutional problems.

He said Nigerians increasingly turn to social media activists because they believe they are more likely to get justice through such platforms than through the courts.

Farotimi warned that unless the country’s justice system and other institutions are reformed, more individuals like VeryDarkMan would emerge.

He urged Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to look beyond the controversy surrounding VeryDarkMan and examine the conditions that have made his growing influence possible.

The media  had earlier reported that VeryDarkMan criticised the legal profession after participating in a panel discussion on insecurity at the NBA conference in Port Harcourt.

The activist defended his invitation to the event, saying he attended to represent poor Nigerians and people without a voice. He subsequently criticised the legal profession, arguing that law was no longer the noble profession it was widely regarded as.
