FG TO REVIVE ABANDONED HOUSING PROJECTS, ALLOCATE TO NIGERIANS

The Federal Government has announced plans to revive viable abandoned housing projects across the country and make the completed estates available to Nigerians.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqa Rabe Darma, disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection of the abandoned National Housing Programme estate at Kubwa-Karsana in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Darma expressed concern over the abandonment of housing estates constructed with taxpayers’ funds, stressing that the government would no longer allow such public assets to waste.
He said the ministry was currently reviewing abandoned housing projects nationwide to determine their level of completion and identify what would be required to complete them.
According to him, the initiative is part of efforts to expand the nation’s housing stock, reduce the housing deficit and advance the Renewed Hope Housing Agenda.
Darma said, “We cannot continue to allow housing projects that were started with public funds to remain abandoned. These are assets belonging to Nigerians, and our responsibility is to ensure that they are completed, functional and occupied by the people who need them.
“Our target is clear. Where projects are viable, we will upgrade them, complete them and ensure that Nigerians can benefit from them. We are determined to deliver more homes and reduce the housing deficit before the end of 2026.”
The minister said viable abandoned projects would be upgraded, completed and allocated transparently to Nigerians.
He added that completing existing abandoned projects would complement new housing developments and enable the government to increase housing delivery more efficiently.
The inspection forms part of a nationwide assessment of federal housing assets aimed at developing strategies for the completion and allocation of viable abandoned projects across the country.
