Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have defeated Brazil 3-1 to secure a place in the final of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian side recorded the victory in their semi-final encounter at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Wednesday.
Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half, but the Flamingos took control after the break.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute after receiving an assist from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.
Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 71st minute before scoring her second goal of the match in the 80th minute, following a pass from Oluebube Umejiaku.
Brazil pulled one goal back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but the Flamingos held on to secure a 3-1 victory.
Coach Akeem Busari’s side will face Japan in Saturday’s final after the Asian team defeated North Korea 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at full time.
Nigeria booked their semi-final ticket with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Venezuela on Sunday. Captain Azeezat Oduntan converted an 89th-minute penalty after Umejiaku was fouled in the box.
The victory marked only the second time the Flamingos have reached the semi-finals of the competition. Their previous appearance was in 2022, when they finished with the bronze medal in India.
Brazil had reached the last four after coming from behind to defeat China 2-1 in the quarter-finals. They also edged Poland 8-7 on penalties following a 3-3 draw in the round of 16.
The Flamingos will now seek to win their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title when they face Japan on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
