The nominations of movies, actors and filmmakers were announced in a pre-dawn statement, with industry observers enlisting “Roma” — lifted by a strong showing at the Golden Globes — in pole position for best film.

Nominations started on Tuesday for the 91st Academy Awards, with Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and musical romance “A Star Is Born” expected to lead the pack in a crowded race.

The ceremony — the climax of Hollywood’s awards season — will be held on February 24.
