JUST IN: POLICE RE-ARREST SOWORE AGAIN AFTER BAIL RELEASE, FILE FRESH CHARGES
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was rearrested on Friday shortly after meeting bail conditions at the Kuje Magistrate Court and being released in connection with the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.
Sowore, together with Prince Emmanuel Kanu (younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu) and Aloy Ejimakor (a former member of Kanu’s legal team) along with 10 others, had been granted bail after meeting the court’s conditions — a bail of ₦500,000 each and two sureties residing within the Federal Capital Territory who had valid identification and tax clearance for three years.
Despite fulfilling these requirements, Sowore was immediately apprehended by police officers outside the courthouse and taken back to the Kuje Correctional Centre. The arrest follows new charges connected to his earlier assertion that President Bola Tinubu is a criminal. He is expected to be formally arraigned on Monday, October 27.
The move has raised concerns among legal observers and civil society organisations, who say the rearrest may undermine judicial process and the right to bail. The police have yet to publicly release detailed information on the nature of the fresh charges, leading to calls for transparency.
Sowore remains in detention as of press time, while the legal team prepares to challenge the new charges and investigate the legality of the re-arrest under Nigerian law.
