Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, who died on Tuesday at the age of 30 after sustaining serious injuries during his side’s match against Andorra.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Tenerife announced the player’s death at about 8:00 am on Tuesday, sparking widespread grief among the club’s supporters and the wider football community.
In a statement, the club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying it was struggling to find words to console the deceased’s family and loved ones.
“We are shattered by the intensity of the pain, our tongues are tied by the shock, and we cannot believe that this is real,” the club said.
Tenerife also expressed solidarity with the player’s family, friends and supporters, adding that nothing could ease the grief surrounding his death.
The club said, “There are no words of consolation, and there is nothing that can ease this feeling filled with sorrow.”
De Miguel’s family also thanked those who had sent messages of support and condolences, while appealing for privacy as they mourned their loss.
The tragic incident occurred during Tenerife’s encounter with Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, when the striker collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during stoppage time.
De Miguel was reportedly attempting to launch a counterattack from the middle of the pitch when Owono rushed out of his penalty area to intercept the ball.
During the collision, the goalkeeper’s knee struck the striker in the chest and face, leaving him unconscious on the pitch.
Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance, while medical personnel attended to De Miguel for several minutes before evacuating him on a stretcher to an ambulance.
He was subsequently taken to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, the striker suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest while being transported to the hospital, prompting medical personnel to carry out resuscitation efforts.
Although his pulse was restored, he remained unconscious and was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition.
Tenerife announced a deterioration in his neurological condition in the early hours of Tuesday before later confirming his death, bringing an end to efforts to save his life.
