A Sharia court in Kano State has sentenced Ahmad Salisu Sheka, a young man convicted of conspiracy and theft, to sweeping duties at the Murtala Mohammed Friday Mosque and mandatory participation in all five daily congregational prayers.

The sentence was handed down by the Upper Sharia Court in Hausawa, Filin Hockey, Kano, presided over by Dr Bello Musa Khalid, after Sheka pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

The court relied on his confession to establish his guilt before ordering him to clean the mosque and attend the five obligatory daily prayers alongside other worshippers.

It also directed him to pay compensation for the offence before handing him over to a correctional facility official, Habib H. Habib, who is expected to ensure that the sentence is carried out.

According to reports, Sheka was arrested alongside a friend over the alleged theft of streetlights in the Sallare neighbourhood of Kano.

However, his alleged accomplice reportedly escaped from those who apprehended them.

The ruling followed Sheka’s admission of guilt, with the sentence combining community service at the mosque with compulsory participation in daily congregational prayers.
