LAGOS GOVT ORDERS COMMUNITIES TO OPEN GATED STREETS, GIVES SEVEN-DAY ULTIMATUM FOR ILLEGAL GATES

The Lagos State Government has directed communities operating gated streets across the state to ensure that all gates are opened daily between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. during the festive period to ease traffic congestion and improve vehicular movement.
The directive, issued by the Ministry of Transportation, also mandates the removal of all unauthorised gates and structures erected on public roads without official approval within seven days of the notice .
According to the ministry, the measure is in line with existing state guidelines and aligns with the THEMES+ Agenda of the current administration, which prioritises free flow of traffic, safety of lives and property, and the promotion of ease of doing business in Lagos State .
While acknowledging the security advantages of gated streets, the government stressed the need to ensure unobstructed vehicular movement, especially on alternative routes currently experiencing increased traffic due to heightened travel, commercial activities, tourism, and entertainment associated with the festive season .
The Ministry of Transportation assured residents that enforcement measures would be implemented to guarantee unrestricted access in and out of all gated streets, with the aim of preventing traffic bottlenecks and safeguarding public safety .
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to making travel, commerce, and tourism pleasant and worthwhile for residents and visitors during the festive period and beyond. The directive was signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on December 23, 2025 .
