Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed two soldiers and a Chinese national in an attack on construction workers in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attack occurred as troops of the Joint Task Force, North West Operation Fansan Yamma, repelled a separate assault on a military base in the area and recovered 17 motorcycles, weapons and other equipment.

Security sources said the incidents occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, amid intensified activities by suspected Lakurawa fighters reportedly operating in large numbers on more than 100 motorcycles.

The Kebbi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the attack on the construction workers, who were involved in the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway project.

Usman said the two soldiers were providing security for the Chinese national and other workers when the attackers launched a surprise assault.

“Yes, the attack occurred, but the terrorists are not from Kebbi State. They infiltrated the state through a village bordering Kebbi State,” he said.

“The soldiers killed were guarding the Chinese national and other workers when the terrorists launched a surprise attack, killing two soldiers and one Chinese national and injuring others.”

The police spokesperson said the identities of the deceased soldiers could not be disclosed because they were military personnel.

Describing the incident as “barbaric and unwarranted”, Usman said joint security agencies had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“Joint security agencies are on the trail of the suspected Lakurawa terrorists who attacked and killed two soldiers and one Chinese national,” he added.

Meanwhile, troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force, North West Operation Fansan Yamma, repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Maiyama in the early hours of Wednesday.

The attackers, reportedly numbering in large numbers and operating more than 100 motorcycles, stormed the military facility with assorted weapons, including General Purpose Machine Guns and Rocket-Propelled Grenades.

However, the troops responded swiftly, forcing the assailants to retreat and abandon weapons, equipment and other logistical items.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, said the troops successfully repelled the assault and prevented the attackers from achieving their objective.

He said subsequent exploitation and pursuit operations led to the recovery of 17 motorcycles, a PKT machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, assorted ammunition and a communication device.

“The recovery of the weapons, ammunition, communication equipment and motorcycles represents a significant setback to the terrorists’ operational capability in the area,” Danja said.

He added that the area remained firmly under military control, while patrols, clearance operations and other security activities continued to track and neutralise fleeing members of the group.

Danja reaffirmed Operation Fansan Yamma’s commitment to protecting communities and denying terrorists freedom of movement within its operational area.

The incidents have heightened security concerns in communities bordering Kebbi and Sokoto states, where suspected Lakurawa fighters have been accused of carrying out attacks and infiltrating local communities.
