LALONG LEADS NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE TO INSPECT INEC PREPARATIONS IN OSUN

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has led a delegation of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters on an oversight visit to Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The delegation, led by the committee chairman, Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South), visited the state on Thursday to assess the preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the off-cycle poll.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Lalong’s Media Office, the visit was carried out in accordance with the oversight powers of the National Assembly under Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The delegation, comprising senators and members of the House of Representatives, was received by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Babalola, alongside other national commissioners deployed for the election.

Lalong said the visit was aimed at assessing INEC’s level of preparedness and identifying potential challenges that could affect the smooth conduct of the election.

He added that the exercise was also intended to ensure that the electoral process met the required standards for a free, fair and credible election.

During the visit, the committee received briefings on security arrangements and the distribution of sensitive electoral materials to polling units across the state.

INEC officials reportedly assured the lawmakers that the commission was fully prepared for Saturday’s election.

The committee acknowledged the concerns raised during the briefing and promised to take necessary legislative action where required.

The delegation is expected to continue its oversight activities as INEC and other stakeholders conclude preparations for the governorship election.
