The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, pollution control and sustainable environmental management, highlighting its significant achievements over the past three decades in advancing a cleaner, safer and healthier Lagos.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr Omobolaji Tajudeen-Gaji, who spoke at the press conference marking the Agency’s 30th Anniversary, described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on LASEPA’s contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development in Lagos State.

Dr Tajudeen-Gaji commended the Agency for its remarkable strides in combating environmental pollution, particularly noise and air pollution. He emphasised that environmental compliance should be driven by continuous public awareness and constructive engagement, rather than waiting until enforcement actions are taken or abatement notices are issued before individuals and business operators comply with established environmental regulations.

The Permanent Secretary further stressed the importance of community participation and sustained public enlightenment, noting that the increasing population of Lagos and the rapid expansion of the State made it imperative for residents, particularly new arrivals, to understand and adhere to environmental standards.

In his remarks, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, described the 30th Anniversary as a significant milestone in the Agency’s history, providing an opportunity to reflect on its journey, assess its accomplishments and recognise its contributions to environmental protection and improved quality of life for Lagos residents.

Dr Ajayi noted that over the past 30 years, LASEPA had made considerable progress in strengthening environmental regulations, improving pollution monitoring systems and expanding its operational capacity to address emerging environmental challenges across the State.

He highlighted the Agency’s achievements in noise pollution control, air quality management, industrial pollution monitoring and regulatory enforcement, noting that its operations had continued to evolve in response to Lagos State’s rapid urbanisation and the changing environmental needs of its growing population.

According to him, the Agency had significantly strengthened its noise pollution monitoring and enforcement activities while embracing digital technology to enhance service delivery and encourage greater public participation.

Dr Ajayi explained that residents could now report environmental violations and track their complaints through the Agency’s online portal, making environmental reporting more accessible, efficient and responsive.

On regulatory enforcement, the General Manager stated that the Agency had sustained consistent interventions against noise pollution and other environmental infractions, stressing that enforcement remained essential to securing compliance with established environmental standards.

He disclosed that LASEPA had carried out no fewer than 1,000 enforcement actions annually in relation to noise pollution over the past three decades, translating to more than 30,000 enforcement actions against businesses and facilities, including industrial establishments, religious centres and other operators.

The General Manager also highlighted LASEPA’s contributions to Nigeria’s carbon market and climate action initiatives, describing the Agency as a leading institution in advancing environmental sustainability and carbon-related programmes.

Dr Ajayi further noted that the Agency’s government-owned environmental laboratory remained a major institutional asset, providing scientific support for environmental monitoring, investigations and evidence-based regulatory decisions.

He expressed appreciation to past administrations, former General Managers, management and staff of the Agency for their invaluable contributions to sustaining LASEPA’s mandate over the years, describing the 30th Anniversary as a celebration of collective commitment, dedication and institutional growth.
