A Magistrates’ Court in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday sentenced a 24-year-old Point of Sale (POS) operator, Yusuf Olamilekan, to 18 months in prison for stealing N1 million from his employer.
Magistrate O.O. Fadairo handed down the sentence, giving Olamilekan the option of paying a N60,000 fine instead of serving jail time. Additionally, she ordered him to repay the stolen N1 million to his employer, Emeka and Jane Company.
Fadairo stated that the prosecution had successfully established the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Although Olamilekan initially pleaded not guilty, the court heard from prosecutor Inspector E.O. Adaraloye that the theft occurred on April 7 around 6 p.m. in Sango-Ota.
According to Adaraloye, the defendant withdrew N1 million from the company’s account without authorization and used the money to gamble, eventually losing the entire amount.
The offense was said to violate Section 383 of the Ogun State Criminal Code, 2006.
