MULTIPLE KARA BRIDGE CRASHES: FRSC ADVISES MOTORISTS TO USE ALTERNATIVE ROUTES(VIDEO)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has advised motorists to use alternative routes as rescue and recovery operations continue following multiple crashes at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday.
According to the command, the first crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan and involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.
Preliminary investigations attributed the crash to speed violation and loss of control.
Seven adult males were involved in the accident. One person died, another sustained injuries, while five others escaped unhurt.
The FRSC disclosed that the body of the deceased remains trapped beneath one of the heavily loaded trucks, requiring heavy-duty recovery equipment before it can be evacuated.
While rescue efforts were ongoing, another crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos involving a Mazda commercial bus.
The lone crash was blamed on brake failure, leaving the driver seriously injured. He was rescued by the FRSC emergency response team and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.
The FRSC said its rescue team, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders, is working to evacuate the crashed vehicles, recover the trapped victim, clear the obstruction and restore the free flow of traffic.
Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to remain patient, exercise caution and cooperate with traffic management officials at the scene.
The command advised motorists to avoid the Kara–Ojodu Berger corridor and use alternative routes until recovery operations are completed.
Motorists travelling from Lagos to Ibadan are advised to divert through the Ikorodu–Sagamu Road, while those heading into Lagos should consider the Lekki-Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu–Sagamu Expressway.
The FRSC also urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated trucks and commercial buses, to ensure their vehicles are mechanically fit before embarking on any journey, with special attention to the condition of their braking systems.
Drivers were further advised to avoid unnecessary night travel, especially during poor visibility caused by darkness, rain or fog. Where night travel is unavoidable, they should reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, avoid dangerous overtaking and stop to rest whenever they feel fatigued, noting that poor visibility and driver fatigue significantly increase the risk of road crashes.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and said it would continue working with relevant emergency and traffic management agencies to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
