NEW INEC CHAIR AMUPITAN TAKES CHARGE, PROMISES CREDIBLE ELECTIONS
Newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), has officially arrived at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja to assume duty.
Amupitan, who was sworn in earlier in the day by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, was received at the commission’s headquarters by national commissioners and senior management staff. His arrival marks the formal beginning of his tenure as the head of Nigeria’s electoral body.
Addressing staff shortly after his arrival, Amupitan pledged to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability in the conduct of elections across the country. He also vowed to strengthen INEC’s institutional capacity and ensure that the commission continues to deliver free, fair, and credible polls.

Amupitan’s swearing-in and assumption of office come a week after the Senate confirmed his appointment following a rigorous screening exercise on October 16. His tenure begins at a critical time, with off-cycle governorship elections approaching and calls for electoral reforms intensifying.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, a professor of law and former university administrator, is expected to lead efforts to enhance technological deployment in elections, address logistics challenges, and rebuild public confidence in the nation’s electoral system.
