A frontline Niger Delta activist, Mallam Julius Obi, has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to give more Nigerian youths opportunities to take up strategic national responsibilities, describing them as prepared, disciplined and capable of delivering results.

Obi made the call while addressing journalists in Abuja on behalf of the United Niger Delta Congress, noting that youths in the oil-rich region had demonstrated their capacity to handle critical responsibilities, including the protection of oil pipelines.

According to the activist, the relative safety of the Niger Delta and the continued flow of the nation’s crude oil reflect the contributions of young people involved in pipeline security.

He maintained that age should not prevent qualified young Nigerians from being considered for strategic assignments, stressing that preparation, discipline and good character should be the determining factors.

“We also address a word to the Federal Government. Nigeria is full of young men and women who are prepared, disciplined and ready to carry national responsibilities,” Obi said.

He urged the Federal Government to continue creating opportunities for young Nigerians who had demonstrated their competence and earned public trust through their performance.

“We urge the Federal Government to keep opening the doors of strategic national service to young Nigerians who have earned trust the only way it can be earned, by delivery,” he added.

The activist also commended President Tinubu for sustaining security reforms in the oil and gas industry.

He further praised the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for coordinating efforts to protect the nation’s pipelines, as well as the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for providing an enabling environment for the operations.

Obi’s remarks followed a recent investigation by the House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, through its technical subcommittee, into petitions against some pipeline surveillance contractors.

The subcommittee reportedly found the allegations against the contractors unsubstantiated and recommended that the petitions be dismissed and further investigations discontinued.

Reacting to the development, Obi said the decision demonstrated the importance of following due process in addressing allegations against contractors responsible for protecting critical oil and gas infrastructure.

He added that effective operations and proven contributions to safeguarding the nation’s oil and gas assets in the Niger Delta deserved recognition and a vote of confidence.
