NIGER IMPOSES 24-HOUR CURFEW FOLLOWING PROTEST OVER MINERS’ DEATHS

Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state following protests and the destruction of property linked to the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Bago announced the curfew during a press conference on Friday, saying it would take effect immediately after the Friday congregational prayers.

He said the measure was necessary to restore order after protesters allegedly vandalised government facilities, a bank, political party offices and private businesses.

“Immediately after the Friday mosque, we are putting a 24-hour curfew here,” the governor said.

Bago said the unrest had resulted in vandals taking over the streets, making it necessary for the government to restrict movement and prevent further destruction.

He added that the State Transport Company had suffered vandalism, while Sterling Bank, party offices and private businesses were also reportedly attacked.

The curfew followed protests in parts of the state over the deaths of suspected illegal miners detained by the NSCDC.

Bago had earlier confirmed that 37 suspected illegal miners died while in custody, with forensic examinations, medical tests and autopsies ordered to determine the cause of the deaths.

The suspects were arrested during enforcement operations against illegal mining in the Wushishi/Lukoto axis on September 15 and 16.

Following the deaths, the NSCDC constituted an investigative team to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the condition of the suspects when they were arrested, their period in custody, detention conditions and the medical care provided to them.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and ordered a full investigation into the incident.

The Federal Government has assured that anyone found responsible will not be shielded, while urging the public not to prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

Former Vice President and 2027 ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has also called for accountability, saying anyone found responsible through action, abuse or negligence should face the consequences.

The cause of the deaths has not yet been established.

Bago appealed to residents to remain calm and exercise restraint as authorities work to restore peace across the state.
