The Nigerian Army has commissioned 49 welfare and infrastructure projects nationwide as part of efforts to improve personnel welfare, strengthen operational effectiveness and address accommodation shortages among officers and soldiers.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday during the commissioning of a newly constructed Officers Transit Accommodation at Life Camp, Abuja.

The facility was one of 11 projects commissioned in the Federal Capital Territory, while the remaining 38 were inaugurated across Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shaibu said the projects aligned with his Command Philosophy, particularly the principles of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which prioritise personnel welfare in building a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force.

He noted that adequate accommodation and essential infrastructure were crucial to boosting morale, enhancing productivity and strengthening the Army’s ability to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.

“The projects underscore the Nigerian Army’s sustained commitment to providing a conducive living and working environment for officers, soldiers and their families,” the COAS said.

Shaibu urged officers who would occupy the newly commissioned transit accommodation to maintain the facility and uphold high standards of discipline and responsibility.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to continued investment in welfare and infrastructure across Army formations and units nationwide, while appreciating President Bola Tinubu for his sustained support for the Nigerian Army.

Earlier, the Chief of Logistics (Army), Major General Adekunle Adeyinka, explained that the Officers Transit Accommodation was constructed to address temporary housing challenges faced by officers posted to Army Headquarters and other formations in Abuja.

He said the facility consists of well-furnished, self-contained apartments equipped with modern amenities to provide comfortable accommodation for officers awaiting permanent housing allocations.

According to him, the development would enhance personnel welfare and administrative efficiency by providing suitable temporary accommodation for officers transitioning between postings.

During the visit, Shaibu also inspected ongoing infrastructure projects at Life Camp, including additional accommodation blocks, road rehabilitation and drainage works.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of construction and directed contractors to comply strictly with approved timelines and specifications.

The Army said the commissioning of the 49 projects demonstrated its continued commitment to addressing accommodation and infrastructure challenges while improving the living and working conditions of personnel and their families.

The initiative is also expected to create a more conducive environment for training, administration and military operations in support of national security.
