NIGERIAN ARMY RESTORES OFFICIAL X ACCOUNT AFTER CYBERATTACK
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Nigerian Army has announced the full restoration of its official X account, @HQNigerianArmy, following a cybersecurity breach that disrupted its control of the platform for more than two months.
The Army disclosed this in a post on its X handle on Sunday, confirming that the account was back under its exclusive official management.
“This account is fully restored and back under the official management of the Nigerian Army. We appreciate your patience and understanding,” the post read.
The restoration brings an end to a recovery process that began after the Army detected unauthorised access attempts on the account on August 29, 2026, at about 5 p.m.
The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, had confirmed the incident, describing it as a cybersecurity breach.
Following the development, the Army said it activated immediate technical and protective measures to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of its official communications.
During the period of restricted control, the military urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard suspicious, misleading or unverified content published on the account.
It also directed Nigerians to obtain authentic information through its other verified communication channels, including its Facebook and Instagram accounts under @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo, the X handle @nigerianarmyinfo and its official YouTube channels.
The incident came weeks after a similar cyberattack on the Defence Headquarters’ X account, @DHQNigeria, earlier in August.
The Defence Headquarters recovered its account within days, announcing its return with a brief “WE’RE BACK” message.
With the restoration of its X account, the Nigerian Army has regained access to one of its major channels for communicating with the public on military operations, security developments and other defence-related matters.
