NIMC DENIES NIN DATABASE BREACH, SAYS VIRAL VIDEO RECYCLED CLAIM

The National Identity Management Commission has denied reports alleging that its National Identity Database has been breached, describing a viral video making the claim as false and unfounded.
NIMC made this known in a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Wednesday.
The commission said the National Identity Database had neither been breached nor compromised, stressing that it maintains multi-layered security infrastructure to protect the personal data of registered citizens and legal residents.
“The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has become aware of a video currently circulating on social media alleging a breach of the National Identification Number (NIN) database,” the statement said.
“The Commission wishes to state, categorically, that this claim is false and unfounded. This is a recycled news story reported in 2024 and duly disclaimed by the Commission.”
NIMC said it was concerned about the circulation of unverified claims, noting that such reports could mislead members of the public and cause unnecessary panic.
The commission urged Nigerians to disregard the viral video and obtain information about the National Identity Management System only through its official communication channels.
NIMC also highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication platform, NINAuth, which it described as a suite of web, API and mobile verification services designed to strengthen data security, protect privacy and simplify access to government services.
According to the commission, NINAuth provides an official channel for integrating with its backend infrastructure while giving individuals greater control over their personal information.
It said the platform requires the explicit consent of NIN holders before their data can be shared for Know Your Customer processes or other verification purposes.
NIMC said the system would enable individuals to securely verify their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or other personal information.
The commission said the initiative was in line with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which provide for the fair, lawful and transparent handling of personal data.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, NIMC said it would continue working with relevant security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen its systems and public engagement against misinformation.
The commission urged members of the public with concerns about their NIN or personal data to contact it through its official channels, including its toll-free line, 0800 08000616462, and designated email addresses.
