NWORGU, OLUWAFEMIAYO WIN GOLD MEDAL FOR NIGERIA IN PARA-POWERLIFTING AT THE COMMON WEALTH GAMES

Folashade Oluwafemiayo won her para–powerlifting women‘s heavyweight title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.She is 41 years old and lifted 175 kilograms, which broke her own world record.She set this record earlier at the 2025 World Para-Powerlifting Championship.

Oluwafemiayo amassed 134.8 points to finish well above the chasing pack and defend the title she won at the last CWG in Birmingham, England.

Rita Ferdinand clinched a silver medal, lifting 158 kg, which improved her total points to 128.2 to finish above Australia’s Hani Watson.

In women’s lightweight, Esther Nworgu won another gold medal with a Games record score of 119 points, ahead of Esther Oyema on 115.5. England’s Olivia Broome took bronze.

Earlier, Rplan Ezurike had missed out on the gold medal in the men’s lightweight para-powerlifting by decimal points in favour of England’s Mark Swan.

Team Nigeria has won five medals from para-powerlifting on the first day of activities at the CWG.

In other sports, Nigeria’s fortune appeared bleaker. In swimming, Clinton Opute finished sixth in the first heat of the men’s 200m individual medley. Both Ayomide Hassan and Abdulrahmon Abdulwahab lost their respective matches in boxing.
