OLYMPIC CHAMPION TARA DAVIS-WOODHALL SURVIVES CAR CRASH, DOUBTS CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE

Olympic long jump champion Tara Davis-Woodhall has described herself as “lucky and blessed to be alive” after surviving a serious car crash while travelling to training.
The 27-year-old American athlete was involved in a “very scary” head-on collision last week, suffering what she described as a severe concussion.
Davis-Woodhall said she escaped without major injuries, although both vehicles involved in the crash were reportedly written off.
“Luckily I walked away without any major injuries,” she said in a social media post on Thursday.
The reigning world champion said she was currently working with her team and doctors to recover but remained uncertain about competing at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, which begin on September 11.
“I’m not sure if I will be ready to compete at Ultimate Championships next week. More updates to come,” she said.
Davis-Woodhall said the crash occurred at an unfortunate time in her preparations, as she was approaching the peak of her training.
“It’s really unfortunate timing; I am at the peak of my training right now,” she said.
The American star added that she was in the best form of her career, making the decision over whether to compete particularly difficult.
“I’m as fast as I’ve ever been. I’m as strong as I’ve ever been. So this decision is very difficult for me. I don’t know where I am right now,” she said.
Davis-Woodhall won the women’s long jump gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics before claiming the world title in Tokyo the following year.
The three-day Ultimate Championships will feature Olympic, world and Diamond League champions, with the winner of each event set to receive a top prize of £111,000.
For now, Davis-Woodhall’s priority is recovering from the accident and determining whether she will be fit enough to compete in Budapest.
The Olympic champion said the experience had also reminded her of the importance of life beyond athletics, despite the unfortunate timing of the crash.
