The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent clash involving supporters at a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, November 7, 2026, along Nnebisi Road, reportedly left one person dead and five others injured.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the command had received intelligence reports indicating a possible outbreak of violence ahead of the rally.
According to the police, organisers of the event were invited to a security meeting and warned against conducting an open road procession. They were instead advised to hold their political activities at a designated venue where adequate security arrangements could be provided.
However, the organisers reportedly ignored the advice and proceeded with the road procession.
The command said the incident occurred at about 12:15 p.m., adding that police operatives responded to a distress call and immediately evacuated the injured victims to the hospital for medical attention.
It added that security had been reinforced in the affected area to prevent further breakdown of law and order, while investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the violence and identify those responsible.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Samuel E. Erale, condemned the incident, stressing that political parties were free to conduct lawful campaigns and other political activities.
However, he urged political parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety and always liaise with the police ahead of political gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.
The police commissioner assured residents of the command’s commitment to a thorough and impartial investigation, urging anyone with useful information to contact the command through 09155570008 or 09155570007.
