ONE FEARED DEAD AS SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERS STRIKE ONITSHA–ENUGU EXPRESSWAY

Fresh fears have emerged among motorists and residents following renewed armed robbery attacks along the Nawfia axis of the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, with one person reportedly killed in the latest incident.

The alarm was raised by a social media user, who described the worsening security situation along the busy highway and urged the Anambra State Government and security agencies to take urgent action to prevent further loss of lives.

According to the source, residents of Nawfia community have repeatedly complained about the persistent activities of suspected armed robbers, who allegedly ambush motorists and other road users along the expressway.

He disclosed that members of the community recently carried out a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise in a bid to curb the attacks.

During the exercise, residents reportedly cleared overgrown vegetation and removed logs allegedly used by the criminals to barricade sections of the highway and trap unsuspecting travellers before attacking them.

Despite the intervention, the source alleged that the suspected robbers have continued to operate with increasing boldness, leaving commuters in fear.

The latest attack, which was reportedly captured in a video circulating on social media, allegedly claimed the life of one person, further heightening concerns over the deteriorating security situation along the route.

The source appealed to security agencies to intensify surveillance on the highway, deploy regular patrol teams and dismantle criminal hideouts believed to be operating within the area.

He noted that the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway remains one of the busiest road corridors in the South-East and should not be left vulnerable to criminal activities.

Residents and commuters also called on the Anambra State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the military and other security agencies to take coordinated and decisive action to restore confidence and ensure the safety of travellers using the expressway.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the reported attack.
