OTU ORDERS IMMEDIATE HALT TO UNAUTHORISED CLAN, VILLAGE CREATION

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing Clan and Village Creation exercise in the state, saying the process was neither authorised nor approved by his administration.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Ani, who said the Governor was informed of the exercise being conducted by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs.
According to Ani, the exercise lacked the approval of the Governor and did not have the backing of the state government, stressing that it must not continue or have any further effect.
He added that the decision was also influenced by a pending legal case before the High Court of Cross River State in Calabar.
The Governor consequently directed that all activities linked to the exercise, including the processing, verification and publication of any Clan or Village Creation List, be stopped immediately.
He further ordered that no steps be taken towards creating, recognising or granting Clan or Village status to any community until further directives are issued by the state government.
The directive also reaffirmed that the Governor’s prior approval is mandatory before any Clan or Village Creation exercise can be undertaken in Cross River State.
Ani therefore instructed the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the Governor’s order.
The development reinforces the Otu administration’s position that the recognition and administrative status of communities must be handled in accordance with lawful government procedures.
