The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has vowed that the party will not succumb to what he described as attempts by undemocratic forces to undermine its survival.

Turaki gave the assurance on Saturday in Abuja while receiving a solidarity visit from the party’s 2027 governorship candidates loyal to his Interim National Working Committee (INWC), following a recent Court of Appeal judgment.

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal had on Wednesday dismissed an appeal filed by Turaki faction’s Board of Trustees Chairman and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, alongside seven others, seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu, upheld the July judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had earlier declined to grant the relief sought.

Reacting to the development, Turaki said the PDP remained determined to overcome its internal challenges, insisting that the party would not be allowed to collapse.

He said the party had received messages of support from its founding members, Board of Trustees members, past and present leaders, as well as other Nigerians concerned about the state of democracy in the country.

According to him, the PDP would remain resolute and continue its struggle to preserve what he described as Nigeria’s only surviving legacy political party.

Turaki disclosed that the party had directed its legal team to review the Court of Appeal judgment and advise on the next line of action, including the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court.

He also maintained that the Board of Trustees did not institute a fresh case but merely sought clarification on existing court judgments concerning the legitimacy of his leadership and the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The PDP factional chairman explained that the names and particulars of the party’s candidates, from the presidential and National Assembly positions to governorship and state assembly seats, had already been submitted to and accepted by INEC.

He argued that the commission was obligated to publish the candidates’ names on its portal following their emergence through the party’s electoral process.

Turaki expressed optimism that the legal battle would eventually be resolved in the party’s favour, assuring the governorship candidates that the PDP would remain on the ballot in the 2027 elections.

Earlier, Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP Forum of Governorship Candidates, Sunday Biggs, urged the Interim National Working Committee to intensify efforts towards reconciliation and unity, particularly at the grassroots level.

Biggs also called for an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court, improved communication with party members and a comprehensive strategy to reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged the party leadership to establish a broader platform for reconciliation and constructive engagement among aggrieved members, stressing that unity, courage and respect for the rule of law were essential to overcoming the party’s current challenges.

The governorship candidates, he added, remained committed to supporting efforts to rebuild the PDP into a stronger, more united and electorally competitive political party.
