The police have caught Mayowa Adejoorin, the Osun state commissioner for environment, after he was linked to gunshots that caused chaos during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign event in Ilesa on Saturday.

It is said that four people were hurt in the incident, with one of them being a 14-yearold boy who was hit by a bullet that accidentally came from somewhere else while he was at his mother‘s store.

Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson of the Osun police command, said officers recovered exhibits, including expended cartridges and Amotekun caps, after the scene was cordoned off.

“Immediately the incident was reported, our personnel moved to the scene, cordoned off the area before some exhibits were recovered, which included expended cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps,” Ojelabi said.
“Also, Mr Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and has been taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process.”

The police said investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

The Imole Campaign Council, the campaign organization of Ademola Adeleke, the state’s governor, condemned the commissioner’s arrest, describing it as politically motivated.

Addressing a press conference in Osogbo, Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson of the council, alleged that the arrest was part of a broader effort to intimidate leaders of the Accord party ahead of the governorship election.

“The latest victim of this alarming pattern is the honourable commissioner for environment and sanitation, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin,” he said.
“The manner of his arrest is particularly disturbing. We consider what happened to Hon. Adejoorin as nothing short of a bandit-like abduction carried out under the cover of police authority.”

Olajengbesi alleged that several Accord leaders in Ijesaland had recently been arrested on what he described as politically motivated allegations.

He asked Tunji Disu, the inspectorgeneral of police (IGP), to step in and tell the police to release Adejoorin right away.

He said, “We want to know the truth.
Why was Hon.Mayowa Adejoorin arrested? What crime did he commit? What proof is there against him?”

This happened just a few hours after the Imole Campaign Council asked the IGP to move Ibrahim Gotan, the police commissioner in charge of security for the August 15 Osun governorship election, because they said he was being unfair and helping people from the APC attack supporters of the Accord party.

In a statement on Saturday, Bamidele Sallam, who leads the campaign council‘s media and publicity group, claimed that Gotan was helping violent groups connected to the APC harm Accord supporters.
