Officers of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested suspected vandals linked to the looting and theft of goods from a truck involved in an accident along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.

According to the statement, the suspects were arrested on Sunday while allegedly vandalising and stealing from a truck that had fallen into a valley in the Afaha community along the highway.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives swiftly moved to the scene and arrested one Adamu Hamza, 19, from Maiduguri, Borno State, who was found with four suspected stolen truck tyres.

In a follow-up operation, officers also arrested a tricycle operator, Anthony James, who was allegedly used to transport the stolen items from the scene.

The statement partly read: the command recorded a breakthrough following the arrest of suspects involved in vandalising and stealing from an accidented truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway after intelligence was received about the criminal activity.

It added that operatives responded promptly, leading to the arrest of Adamu Hamza in possession of the suspected stolen tyres, while further investigation resulted in the arrest of Anthony James for allegedly conveying the items.

DSP John confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.

She also noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has warned criminal elements to desist from looting accident scenes and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and enhanced surveillance to protect lives and property.

Residents were further urged to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and useful information to security agencies.
