POLICE DETAIN FOUR OFFICERS ACCUSED OF EXTORTING ICPC CHAIRMAN IN ABUJA

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained four officers over allegations that they extorted ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an unauthorised stop-and-search operation in Abuja.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed this on Monday while addressing journalists in Abuja, stating that the officers had been taken into custody and were undergoing disciplinary procedures over the alleged misconduct.
According to Sanusi, preliminary investigations revealed that the officers allegedly abandoned their official duty posts, gathered around the Banex area of Wuse, and established an illegal checkpoint where they reportedly extorted money from motorists.
He alleged that the officers stopped Dr. Aliyu without knowing his identity and compelled him to withdraw ₦53,000 through a Point of Sale (POS) machine, alongside transaction charges, before allegedly sharing the proceeds among themselves.
The commissioner described the alleged action as criminal and a violation of the professional standards expected of officers of the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that those found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.
Sanusi said the command commenced investigations immediately after receiving reports of the incident. He explained that the officers were declared wanted, and the arrest of the alleged leader of the group later led to the apprehension of the other suspects.
He assured that all officers found responsible would be punished in line with police regulations, including possible dismissal from service where necessary.
The police commissioner also reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police prohibiting officers on patrol from carrying out unlawful searches of citizens’ mobile phones.
He advised members of the public to resist illegal demands for roadside phone searches and report any officer involved through police emergency lines or official complaint platforms.
Sanusi further urged residents to promptly report cases of extortion, harassment and other forms of police misconduct, assuring that the FCT Command remains committed to ensuring accountability and professionalism within the force.
