The Nigeria Police Force has distanced itself from a circulating online notice promoting a programme titled “AFRIPOL 2026,” describing the initiative as unauthorized and misleading.

In a disclaimer issued on Wednesday via X, the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, said the police neither approved nor endorsed the purported event.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to state categorically that it did not approve, endorse, or authorize the purported ‘AFRIPOL 2026’ programme currently being circulated online,” Placid stated.

The police also condemned the use of the name “AFRIPOL,” stressing that it refers exclusively to the African Union’s official police cooperation mechanism and not to any private initiative.

According to the statement, AFRIPOL is “the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation, an official continental policing structure established under the African Union framework, and not a platform for private or unauthorized programmes.”

The force further rejected claims or impressions suggesting that the event had the backing of the police leadership or the institution itself.

It stated that neither the Inspector-General of Police nor the Nigeria Police Force authorised the use of the IGP’s image, the official police logo, or the identity of the force in connection with the programme.

“Furthermore, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force did not authorise the use of the image of the Inspector-General of Police, the official logo, or the identity of the Force in connection with the said programme,” the statement added.

The police warned members of the public, corporate organisations, and potential sponsors to avoid any dealings linked to the programme, including financial support or promotional involvement.

“Members of the public and corporate organisations are advised to disregard the publication and refrain from any form of sponsorship, payment, or engagement relating to the said event,” the force said.
