POLICE INVESTIGATE OFFICER’S ‘ARMED ROBBERS WILL VISIT YOU’ THREAT TO CALABAR COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a policeman allegedly threatening the Chairman of Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, Apostle James Koko Anam, during a heated altercation at a checkpoint.
In the footage circulating on social media, Anam and personnel of the state police command were seen engaged in a heated exchange during a stop-and-search operation in the Calabar metropolis.
During the confrontation, one of the officers was heard telling the council chairman, “Armed robbers will visit you,” while also saying, “I have paid my dues in this Cross River State.”
The footage has generated reactions from residents, with concerns raised over the conduct of the police personnel and the implications of such a threat coming from a law enforcement officer.
However, the Cross River State Police Command, in a statement issued on Friday, said it had commenced an inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Sunday Eitokpah, said preliminary findings indicated that the incident occurred about three weeks ago during a stop-and-search operation by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit at an undisclosed location within Calabar.
He said, “The Cross River State Police Command is aware of a video currently circulating on social media concerning an alleged altercation involving operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit and the Chairman of Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, Apostle James Koko Anam, at an undisclosed stop-and-search point within the Calabar metropolis.
“Preliminary information available to the command indicates that the incident occurred approximately three weeks ago during a stop-and-search operation. The command, however, emphasises that the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been fully established.”
The command urged members of the public to refrain from drawing conclusions solely from the video, noting that the footage might not have captured events leading to the confrontation or what happened immediately afterwards.
Eitokpah said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ajo Ordue, had ordered a discreet and impartial investigation to establish the facts and assess the conduct of all persons involved.
He added that the command had commenced the process of inviting both the council chairman and the affected police personnel to provide their respective accounts of the incident.
The police spokesperson assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and objectively, adding that any misconduct established would be sanctioned in accordance with extant laws and police regulations.
