PREMIER LEAGUE RETURNS AS MAN CITY FACE HOSTILE LIVERPOOL TEST

Agency Report
Manchester City are expected to face a hostile atmosphere when they travel to Liverpool on Sunday for their first match since being found guilty of more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
City have appealed the verdict and continue to maintain their innocence. However, the club’s position in the English top flight could be under threat following findings that they used “sham” sponsorship agreements to inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion).
Elsewhere, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will be desperate for victory when they clash at Old Trafford, while Arsenal will seek to return to winning ways against Leeds United after suffering a rare defeat.
The Premier League resumes this weekend following a three-week international break, with several high-profile fixtures expected to shape the early stages of the campaign.
Manchester City’s rise to dominance in English football following their Abu Dhabi-backed takeover 18 years ago has come at Liverpool’s expense more than most clubs.
Although the financial charges against City cover the period between 2009 and 2018, the foundations established during those years helped the club maintain its dominance throughout much of Pep Guardiola’s subsequent tenure.
Under former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, the Reds twice finished behind Guardiola’s City despite accumulating more than 90 points in a single season.
The intense title battles between the two clubs over the past decade have turned their meetings into one of the Premier League’s biggest fixtures, with the football world once again turning its attention to Anfield on Sunday.
City have won every match since Enzo Maresca replaced Guardiola, but their title ambitions could suffer a major setback if the independent commission’s verdict results in sanctions that the club cannot overturn on appeal.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will hope to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding their rivals and revive their own campaign.
Andoni Iraola remains unbeaten as Liverpool manager, but draws against Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Fulham have left the Reds six points behind the league leaders.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Iraola described the match as a significant occasion and expressed confidence that the home supporters would play an important role.
“I think it’s a big game and I think everyone is expecting to play, to watch, to be part of that game,” he said.
“We know we will have to be at our best and also I know that the people will be looking to help the team.”
Manchester City’s financial controversy has overshadowed Manchester United’s disappointing start to the season.
United have collected just five points from their opening five matches, despite facing what appeared to be a relatively favourable run of fixtures.
Manager Michael Carrick is already under scrutiny just months after being appointed on a permanent basis, with questions mounting over his ability to restore the fortunes of the struggling English giants.
United face Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday before embarking on a demanding schedule that includes trips to Atletico Madrid, Leeds United and Como within nine days.
The Red Devils will also face Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa before the next international break, leaving Carrick with little time to address the team’s early-season struggles.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have also endured a difficult opening to the campaign despite spending more than £300 million on new signings during the transfer window.
Spurs have managed just two points from their first five matches, leaving them at the bottom of the table during the three-week international break.
The clash at Old Trafford therefore presents both teams with an important opportunity to secure a much-needed victory and ease the pressure on their respective managers.
Defending champions Arsenal will look to get their title defence back on track when they host Leeds United in Saturday’s early kick-off at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners’ perfect start to the campaign came to an abrupt end in their previous outing, when they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Brighton.
However, developments in Manchester City’s financial case have strengthened Arsenal’s position as bookmakers’ favourites to retain the Premier League title.
Manager Mikel Arteta also extended his contract until 2030 this week, underlining his commitment to building a successful long-term project in north London.
Arteta believes the club’s ambitions extend beyond ending their 22-year wait for another league title, insisting that winning the Premier League would mark the beginning of a sustained period of success.
“This is only the beginning of what we can achieve together,” the Spanish manager said.
Arsenal will now aim to respond positively against Leeds as they seek to maintain their position among the leading contenders for the title.
