SERIAKE DICKSON EXPLAINS WHY HE REFUSED TO JOIN APC

The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has explained that he declined to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because he opposed the emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria.
Dickson spoke on Thursday when the management of Leadership Newspaper paid him a visit.
The former Bayelsa State governor said the crisis and decline within his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prompted him to pursue a new political platform.
Reflecting on the circumstances that led to the formation of the NDC, Dickson said the decision was made at a challenging time when the prospects of building a strong opposition party appeared uncertain.
He explained that the situation within the PDP influenced his choice to pursue a different political path rather than defect to the APC.
“I did not believe Nigeria should become a one-party state,” Dickson said.
The lawmaker said his decision was also driven by the need to preserve political competition and provide Nigerians with an alternative platform for participation in the democratic process.
He said rather than join an existing party, he and his political associates opted to establish a new organisation capable of competing with the ruling party.
Dickson added that the NDC had recorded significant progress since its formation, describing it as a formidable political party and a major opposition platform in Nigeria.
