TINUBU SWEARS IN AMUPITAN AS INEC CHAIR, TASKS HIM ON ELECTORAL INTEGRITY
President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The brief ceremony took place at 1:50 p.m. inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Administering the oath of office, President Tinubu charged the new INEC boss to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s elections and strengthen the institutional capacity of the electoral body. He urged Amupitan to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in the conduct of future polls.
The appointment marks the beginning of Amupitan’s tenure at the helm of INEC, following his confirmation by the Senate after a rigorous screening exercise on October 16.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and seasoned legal scholar, is expected to lead ongoing electoral reforms, enhance voter confidence, and ensure that technology continues to play a vital role in improving the credibility of elections.
His swearing-in comes at a time of heightened public interest in electoral reforms and growing calls for stronger institutional independence of INEC ahead of upcoming off-cycle governorship elections across several states.
