A speeding truck has killed 13 people after crashing into a crowd attending a Hindu festival in India, officials said on Sunday.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu described the incident as “heartbreaking” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The heavily loaded truck reportedly lost control in the early hours of Sunday and ploughed into devotees gathered at a temple in Gwalior, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency quoted hospital officials as confirming that 13 people had died in the crash.
In a message shared on social media, Murmu said, “I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of those injured.”
India, which has a population of approximately 1.4 billion, recorded more than 183,000 road traffic deaths in 2025, according to the country’s roads ministry. The figure represents more than 500 deaths daily.
Official data attribute many of the accidents to inadequate road infrastructure, poorly maintained vehicles and driver fatigue.
