Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has disclosed that his administration has paid about ₦7 billion in compensation to property owners affected by ongoing road construction projects across the state over the past three and a half years.

The governor said approximately 4,865 households across Kaduna’s three senatorial zones had received compensation since he assumed office.

He made this known on Saturday during the flag-off of compensation payments worth about ₦2 billion to 865 households affected by the construction of township roads in Zaria, Giwa and Shika.

Speaking at the event, held at Waziri Lawal Primary School in Angwan Iya, Zaria, Sani said his administration had remained committed to ensuring that development projects respect human dignity.

“Since taking office on May 29, 2023, we have remained guided by the conviction that development must advance human dignity,” he said.

The governor explained that the reconstruction of 11 township roads in Zaria and Sabon Gari Local Government Areas, alongside the Giwa and Shika township roads, reflected his administration’s determination to improve connectivity and stimulate economic activities.

According to him, the projects would ease transportation, support commercial activities and improve access to schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

He added that the long-term benefits of the infrastructure projects would be measured by the opportunities they create and their impact on residents’ quality of life.

Sani noted, however, that some residential buildings, businesses and public utilities were located within the designated rights-of-way for the projects, making it necessary to address the impact of construction on affected communities.

He said the government recognised the need to balance infrastructure development with the welfare of residents whose properties would be affected.

“Today, we commence the distribution of compensation cheques amounting to approximately ₦2 billion,” the governor said.

He explained that the payments were intended to help affected families relocate, rebuild their homes and reorganise their livelihoods.

According to Sani, compensation was an obligation to residents whose properties were required for public development and was intended to prevent them from bearing unnecessary hardship in the course of delivering public infrastructure.

The governor commended residents from Babban Dodo to Kofar Kuyan Bana, Rimin Tsiwa to Kofar Gayan, Tudun Wada, Giwa Township and Shika Township for their patience and cooperation throughout the process.

He acknowledged that relocation could bring uncertainty, financial costs and disruption to residents’ familiar surroundings, adding that their willingness to cooperate had helped the government better understand the impact of the projects.

Sani also praised the surveyors, valuers, engineers and community representatives who contributed to the property assessment process.

He further directed relevant utility agencies to accelerate the safe relocation of water, electricity and telecommunications infrastructure affected by the road construction projects.
